Janus, Ego and the Revolving Door. (Making and Breaking of New Year’s Resolutions.)
Janus , Ego and the Revolving Door is this week’s suggest lesson on how the past present and future should work together but often each and every one of us gets way laid ,delayed, trapped and distracted from moving on with everyday life.
For those of you who know me I have written about Janus before, strangely enough 5 years ago 14/01/12 I posted an article on the web that I wrote about him called
Dealing with the past, sorting out the present and looking forward to the future.
I will add it again this month for those of you who might want to read it again. However, this story like Ego has a different story to tell and just as important as the last. This is what spirit shares with us 5 years on.
The Roman God Janus is represented by two heads back to back. It is also given to the month of January and the story goes that one head faces the past the other looks forward to the future. His name also was given to the month of January which is pretty neat when you think he gets to see in the New Year and say goodbye to the old.
It’s the time of new beginnings, fresh promises that sometime easily get broken. Janus is also the door keeper as like a door it opens both in and out of the room, so he gets to see what’s behind him and what is to come.
Janus name is said to be linked with to our American friend the word Janitor a keeper of buildings normally schools.
I immediately think of a cartoon ‘Recess’, of the comic ‘Beano ‘and ‘The Bash Street Kids’ and finally ‘Potter’ in the old comedy classic ‘Please Sir’. These people spent hours running around usually after teachers and cleaning up after all the spills and spoils of daily life. So like all teachers and adults we make a mess and need help to clear up.
Janus or January which is my New Year’s thoughts allow me to realise that this month is a month of cleaning up and throwing out it also a time that we reflect on the past having spent the last year or months, hoping that we will meet that certain someone or even that certain someone will wake up and realised what they have thrown away.
Over the next few weeks I will touch on this again as January is a time for new beginning as February is the time for Lovers. So read on and enjoy a new twist to Janus
Ego was feeling bored it would soon be another year and though he had made some progress with his appetite there was always room for one more good feed. The Christmas parties were well and truly over and he was sick of Turkey, mince pies and all the trimmings. He was fed up with egg nog and party hats.
Soon the Christmas Spirit would break the rows would start the kids would scream and the adults would start to fight. The over expensive gifts, returned to the shops along with half the presents brought due to not fitting wrong colour and seriously what was ‘Aunty’ thinking when she brought that!
Ego crept around the door he noticed that Janus was catching 40 winks. Ego’s mind started to whirl as another mad scheme idea entered his small but compact brain. Janus was a God, a Roman one and tended to be a bit stuck in the past and yet was still only just looking into the future.
Here was mischief in the making. If he waited just before the stroke of midnight on New Year’s Eve he could persuade the old cougher to have a drink, he then could drop him a Mickey Finn. Next came, the end of year bash and the drunken parties the promises of resolutions which 99.9% of the population made and broke before the first week of January was out YUMMMMMMMMMM! All he had to do was get through that awful song.
Anyway back to the plan. Ego approached Janus and said
“Ello me old mate!” (In a very bad cockney accent which was not really fooling Janus)
“What do you want Ego? Can’t you see I am busy?”
Ego spoke with caution and explained he was just being friendly and offered Janus a drink, Janus taken back by Ego’s pleasantries was distracted by the barney going on at number 13 decided that a drink would be rather pleasant.
Janus woke up his head hurt he couldn’t remember how many he actually had but it felt that his head was spinning. He felt rather odd and his view seemed to have changed his position in life was to look back and then to look forward he had 2months of the year to keep the peace and report back to the realms on the state of play of the planet.
Some said he was getting old but how would they know it was a specialised job he did and weren’t many were two faced enough to be fair and honest with the old and the new yes mankind could be two faced again that was for personal gain and often ended up feeding Ego again.
Something, felt odd, strange, peculiar, weird, he could not put his finger on it which again was rather funny as most saw him as just head, not just any head one with faces. In front of him was glass next it spun behind him was glass two people stood in front talking with a strong accent. He looked forward the empty space spun again and the strong accent spoke again. Next without rhyme or reason a lady with a small dog appeared in front this time she had a suitcase.
Poor old Janus had found himself stuck on top of a posh London Hotel on a glass revolving door instead of being able to see into the past and present and make a comment his life was going around in circles and he was feeling rather sick. He was used to being over doorways people would walk in and walk out like December he could look back over the past year and remember all the things that had happened for that year the good the bad and the ugly.
He could hold on to past hurt and keep it there. He could also sit and look into the coming year and with that he could decide who and what moved on even though who ever walked through had the power to change the weak got weaker and the foolish got bitter. Ego loved Janus.
Janus on the other hand was truly two faced even he did not want to go into every year with being bitter and twisted that was why he only got 2 months to have effect yes he looked back on the year but only had control of January up until February.
Then February took over and with the help of cupid and love in his corner and it was possible to change the coming year.
With that for some strange reason Janus started to laugh a real belly laugh tears ran down both faces he could see the funny side. Life in the present the here and now was complicated. People change from one minute, to the next and your life and history were usually found on social media like Facebook.
Yes he would always look at the past and from now on try to look at the present rather than wondering about the future. He only got 4 weeks of January the sales were great and he seen a rather smart hat which was half price in the Oxford Street Sales.
Instead of thinking he controlled last year he could change his view, his thoughts his plans, and try to be a positive influence this year. “Now what’s for dinner? “
To be honest he didn’t think Ego was going to feel like eating.
New Year’s Resolution
‘Don’t mess with Janus’ leave him on the door looking forward and back and he might forget next year that he went around in circles.
This year live in the present not the past or the future lets enjoy the journey one day at a time. If you enjoy this story let me know.
